Description

1858 Three Cent Silver, Sharp PR67
Scarce in All Grades

1858 3CS PR67 NGC. CAC. The 1858 is the first issue in the proof silver three cent series with a recorded mintage, given in the Guide Book as 210 pieces. Certified population data shows 211 pieces have been graded, although this figure is undoubtedly (highly) inflated by resubmissions. A survival of possibly 100 coins in all grades is more in line with the frequency of auction appearances: Only a couple coins are auctioned per year on average. This beautiful Superb Gem is fully struck, with both sides blanketed in uniformly blended lavender-gold and olive-gray toning. The devices are notably frosty and deliver modest contrast beneath the rich patina. Housed in a prior generation holder and rare this well-preserved. Census: 5 in 67 (1 in 67 ★ ), 1 finer. CAC: 3 in 67, 0 finer (10/18).
Ex: ANA Signature (Heritage, 8/2015), lot 3957, were it brought $12,925.
