Description

1858 Three Cent Silver, PR64
Last Type Two Issue

1858 3CS Three Cent Silver PR64 PCGS. The year 1858 saw the final use of the Type Two design on the trime. Of course, this date also marks the beginning of the commercial marketing of proof sets by the Mint. The proof mintage for the trime is estimated at 300 pieces, and examples in Choice condition are quite scarce today. The present coin is a lovely Choice specimen, sharply struck, but with some detail missing from the outline of the star because of polished dies. The surfaces are brightly reflective, with wisps of pale green and scarlet toning. Population: 34 in 64, 30 finer (8/10).
