Description

1859 Three Cent Silver, Toned PR65
First Year of the Type Three Design

1859 3CS PR65 PCGS. CAC. A medley of lavender, electric-blue, and mint-green patination takes on deeper hues on the reverse of this Gem proof, where it is joined by blushes of reddish-brown. The design elements are sharply struck, especially the lines of the shield and those radiating from the shield to the star points. Some of the reverse stars are weak in the center, however. Both sides have been well-cared for.

Population Data (8/15): PCGS shows 20 submissions in PR65 and six finer. NGC reports 21 in PR65 and 13 finer.

Heritage Commentary: This is the first year of the Type Three silver three cent piece, showing one outline to the obverse star. The new design type was intended to improve strike quality. A total of 800 proofs were minted, representing a hefty increase from the 210 pieces produced in 1858.
