Description

1860 Three Cent Silver, PR67+
Fantastic Patina, Sole Finest at PCGS

1860 3CS PR67+ PCGS. CAC. Fantastic patina complements pristine, problem-free surfaces on this remarkably attractive Superb Gem proof Type Three three cent silver. Glowing amber-gold cedes to deeper cherry-red, violet, and cobalt-blue toning on both sides, on surfaces that are essentially mark-free. A touch of strike weakness on the inner shield border on the obverse and the olive-leaf sprig on the reverse is the only quibble, and a minor one since it is on a coin of such magnificent quality and enormous eye appeal.

Although 1,000 examples of this issue were recorded struck, Walter Breen's Proof Encyclopedia claims that only 538 were issued, and the rest were melted. PCGS reports only 13 submissions at the Gem proof level or finer, and this PR67+ is the sole example in PR67, with the second finest being three pieces in PR66. The CAC approval further cements this piece's claim to the sole finest graded of this date.(Registry values: N4719)
