Description

1862 Three Cent Silver, PR67
Vivid Iridescent Toning

1862 3CS PR67 NGC. After two high-mintage years in 1860 and 1861, the Mint reduced proof output to just 550 examples. Breen notes in his Proof Encyclopedia that some 430 silver proofs sets were sold over the course of the year, and remaining sets were melted. The central motifs are heavily frosted and contrast against moderately mirrored fields. The multicolor toning almost certainly prevents a Cameo designation, especially on the reverse. However, what the surfaces lack in reflectivity they make up for in eye-appealing patina. Iridescent hues of rose-violet, peach-orange, blue, and green invest this Superb Gem proof with magnificent aesthetic quality to match its high technical grade.
