Description
1863/2 Three Cent Silver, Sharp PR64
An Important Numismatic Rarity
1863/2 3CS PR64 PCGS. CAC. Breen-2944. Shades of yellow-gold
patina embrace the shield and upper portions of the star on this
near-Gem proof, transitioning to reddish-tan over the remainder of
the obverse. Blushes of lavender, powder-blue, and orange-gold
cascade over the reverse. Razor-sharp definition occurs on the
design elements. Both sides have been well-cared for, further
enhancing the coin's pleasing eye appeal. What appears to be the
downstroke of a 2 is clearly visible on the lower-left part of the
3 in the date.Variety: Breen-2944. Breen (1988) states: "Restrike. Proofs only. Very rare. Heavy 1863 punched over lighter 1862."
Population Data (9/15): PCGS reports 11 submissions in PR64 and seven finer. There is no listing for the 1863/2 on the NGC website.
Heritage Commentary: The PCGS CoinFacts website Survival Estimate for the 1863/2 is 35 pieces in all grades, yielding a Rarity Scale of 8.8 out of 10. Jaime Hernandez writes of the 1863/2: "This is one of three different over dates in the entire series. The Mint produced an over date for the circulation strike issues in 1862 and 1869. For the Proofs it struck over dates in 1863 and in 1869." Our Auction Archives list 41 appearances of the 1863/2 proof three cent silver in all grades over the past 22 years, a number of them known duplicates.
