Description

1863 Three Cent Silver, PR64
Second Lowest Mintage in the Series

1863 3CS PR64 PCGS. A blend of russet, bluish-purple, and sea-green patination runs over the obverse of this near-Gem proof, ceding to variegated purple, bluish-green, cobalt-blue, reddish-brown, and violet on the reverse. The design elements are well-struck, and neither side reveals significant marks.

Population Data (8/15): PCGS shows 50 submissions in PR64 and 34 finer, with NGC showing respective totals of 39 and 43 finer.

Heritage Commentary: The 460-piece production of the 1863 three cent silver proof is the second lowest of the "regular issue" proof mintage in the series, trailing only the reported 210-piece 1858. PCGS and NGC have seen nearly 340 submissions of the 1863, indicating that much of this issue was likely hoarded during the Civil War.(Registry values: N991)
