Description
Superb Cameo Proof 1863 Three-Cent Silver
1863 3CS PR67 Cameo NGC. This is the finest Cameo Proof example of this issue to be certified by either major grading service. The three-cent silver denomination was originally intended to ease the purchase of postage stamps after the letter rate was raised to three cents. Business strikes were produced in considerable quantities for several years, however, by the time the Civil War reached its pinnacle in 1863, production of business strikes had nearly halted. From 1863 through the end of the series, only 83,000 business strikes were coined, with the balance produced in proof format for collectors. In 1863, 460 of these proofs were coined. This example has deeply reflective fields around lustrous devices with excellent cameo contrast. The contrast is masked on the obverse by deep blue and iridescent toning while the reverse is fully brilliant with only a touch of gold at the very edges.
