Superb Cameo Proof 1866 Silver Three-Cent

1866 3CS PR67 Cameo NGC. For some reason, the mintage of business strike 1866 three-cent silver coins jumped to a whopping 22,000 coins, the highest mintage from 1863 through the end of the series. Most of those did not survive, and today, a high-grade Mint State example is just as scarce as any of the preceding few years. In addition to the production of business strikes, which we hesitate to call circulation strikes for they really did not circulate, just 725 Proofs were coined. Of those, this example is one of the finest survivors. It is a glorious cameo proof that may actually qualify for the ultra-cameo designation, except that the contrast is somewhat subdued by steel-blue and iridescent toning. The surfaces are exceptional in quality, completely lacking post-mint imperfections. A couple small lintmarks appear on the obverse, as made. These include concentric rings at the bottom of the shield. The reverse has several diagonal polish lines, also as made. This is a wonderful example that will be a delight for the connoisseur.
