Description

1869/8 Three Cent Silver, PR66 Cameo
Delicate Peripheral Toning

1869/8 3CS PR66 Cameo PCGS. CAC. Ex: Texas Trimes. What Walter Breen once referred to as an underlying 8 is faintly evident within the lower loop of the 9 in the date; however, recutting is also evident on the upper edge of the lower loop of the 6, which has led some to suggest that the so-called "overdate" is actually a repunched 69. The variety is unlisted in Cherrypickers' and does not appear in the Guide Book. PCGS has authenticated only a few examples, this Premium Gem Cameo representative being among the finer-known. Brilliant centers yield to lovely rainbow toning around the peripheries. The devices are sharp and frosty, providing stark contrast with the glassy fields. Population: 3 in 66 (1 in 66+) Cameo, 1 finer (6/15).
