Description

1869/8 Three Cent Silver, PR67+
Superb Eye Appeal and Technical Quality

1869/8 3CS PR67+ PCGS. CAC. RPD-001. Ex: Legend Collection. Walter Breen originally listed this variety as an overdate in his Proof Encyclopedia, and it is recognized as such by PCGS. However, Kevin Flynn, in his Authoritative Reference on Three Cent Silver Coins, refutes its status as an overdate, revealing that the curvature of the underlying digit beneath the 9 and the recutting on the adjacent 6 more accurately represent a repunched date, and not an 1869/8 overdate, as previously thought. Still, this is an interesting variety, unlisted in the Cherrypickers' reference and not counted among those listed under NGC's VarietyPlus service.

PCGS lists this example as the sole finest non-Cameo representative by more than three grade points of the so-called 1869/8 variety, and among normal date pieces it still ranks as the only Plus-designated non-Cameo PR67 coin at that service, with none numerically finer (1/15). The design elements are fully defined, and the fields showcase deep reflectivity. Beautiful violet and ocean-blue peripheral toning yields to warm golden hues on the reverse, while the obverse is more evenly colored in vivid aquamarine patina. A remarkable coin in terms of both the variety and the issue in general.
