Description

1870 Three Cent Silver, PR68 ★ Cameo
The Finest Cameo at NGC

1870 3CS PR68 ★ Cameo NGC. The 1870 is tied with two other three cent silver issues for highest proof mintage, though as one might imagine, top-flight specimens are as challenging for the 1870 as they are for other issues with slightly smaller mintages. This exquisitely preserved piece stands alone atop the combined certified population for Cameo coins (3/14). Blue-green and gold-orange peripheral shadings add a fantastic dimension of eye appeal to each side, and the frost on the essentially untoned central devices stands out beautifully. The Star designation is well-deserved.
Ex: Cincinnati Central States (Heritage, 4/2009), lot 2116, which realized $21,850.
