Marvelous 1872 Three Cent Silver, PR68

1872 3CS PR68 ★ NGC. The 1872 proof three cent silver, with a mintage of 950 pieces, has a relatively high demand from date collectors, as only 1,000 circulation strikes were coined, which are seen infrequently. Proof specimens are available through the Gem level of preservation, after which the certified population tapers off.
A mere five 1872 proofs have been awarded the coveted Star designation, including the present PR68 specimen. Splashes of aqua-blue, purple, and yellow-gold mingle throughout both sides, and each offers modest field-motif variance. An exacting strike leaves crisp definition on the design features, and both faces are immaculately preserved. Census: 3 in 68 ★ , 0 finer (2/09).(Registry values: N4719)
