Description

1873 Three Cent Silver, PR66
Richly Toned, Proof-Only Issue

1873 3CS PR66 NGC. The 1873 issue was proof-only and consisted of just 600 pieces. It was the final issue of the series. Walter Breen believed many pieces were melted on July 10, 1873, to make way for the new proof sets containing the Arrows coins and the nickel three cent pieces. Dark green-blue peripheral toning on both sides accentuates the central devices, adding to the visual appeal. Shades of fuchsia, orange, and gold also appear. The strike is sharp overall, with a few of the stars revealing minor incompleteness. Census: 33 in 66 (2 in 66+, 1 in 66★ ), 10 finer (2/24).
