Description

1873 Three Cent Silver, PR66
A Proof-Only Issue, Climactic Key Date

1873 3CS PR66 PCGS. CAC. The final proof-only mintage of 600 1873 three cent silvers celebrated the end of the diminutive small coin in silver format. In retrospect, the three cent silver was too small to be practical in circulation and contained too little silver to be hoarded. This beautiful, final-year proof captivates the eye with steel-blue borders set against shades of pink and pale-violet at the centers. The central motifs are toned yet heavily frosted for discernible contrast. Watery mirrored fields surround the pinpoint-sharp devices. Population: 19 in 66, 3 finer. CAC: 18 in 66, 8 finer (10/17).(Registry values: N1793)
