Description

1856 Three Dollar Gold, PR62 Cameo
A Pre-1858 Proof Rarity

1856 $3 PR62 Cameo PCGS. CAC. Garrett and Guth offer these notes on the date, which has an unknown but doubtless small mintage as a proof:

"Fewer than a dozen 1856 $3 gold pieces are known in Proof condition, with the true number being closer to eight. Some, if not all, show traces of a small DOLLARS beneath a larger version. Apparently, this die was left over from 1854 and modified to conform to the newer large DOLLARS variety."

This example shows the curious overpunched feature, as well as ample butter-yellow mirrors and devices with contrasting frost. Though a number of hairlines affect each side and a shallow curving pinscratch extends behind Liberty's head, the overall eye appeal is solid, and grade matters little at this level of rarity. Population: 1 in 62 Cameo, 0 finer. CAC: 1 in 62, 0 finer (10/16).
