Description

Illustrious 1858 PR 64 Three-Dollar, Ex Eliasberg/Clapp

1858 PR 64 PCGS. The Eliasberg/Clapp Specimen. A delicate two-toned specimen with a few wispy obverse hairlines limiting the grade. Hints of orange patina at the margins and occasionally on the portrait. From an estimated mintage of 15 proofs, perhaps only 8 or 9 are locatable today, even fewer of superior quality. This is the first 1858 proof three-dollar we can recall offering through auction during this decade and a highly regarded coin with one of numismatics' most illustrious pedigrees. Population: 2 in 64, 1 higher (4/97).
Ex: Eliasberg/Clapp (B & R, 10/82), lot 282; and earlier from The William H. Woodin Collection (Elder, 3/11).
