Description

Splendid 1870 PR 64 Cameo Three-Dollar Gold

1870 PR 64 Cameo NGC. A splendid, glittering specimen with appreciable contrast for a proof from this era. Only a few wispy hairlines in front of the portrait foil an otherwise legitimate claim to gem quality. The date is again placed lower in the field on proofs than on business strikes and the leaf to the left of the date is intact. Just 35 proofs were issued in 1870 and, at most, 18-20 pieces survive, a number that comes under some question because of deceptive first strikes that in the past were sold as proofs.
