1876 Three Dollar Gold Proof, AU Details
    Celebrated U.S. Gold Rarity

1876 $3 -- Tooled -- PCGS Genuine. Proof, AU Details. The 1876 three dollar gold was, like its more-celebrated 1875 counterpart, a proof-only issue; the 1876 was struck to the extent of a reported 45 proofs, while the 1875 saw a production of only 20 reported proof coins. Both dates are, some 140 years later, considered classic rarities within the American gold series. We say reported, because many numismatists believe the 1876 proof was restruck later -- as, for that matter, many believe that the 1875 was restruck as well.

This piece shows a patch of thin marks in the left obverse field, and some stray scratches occur lower down in the same area; a pair of others underline the ED in UNITED. A few other scattered contact marks are consistent with the AU Details grade given, including one short but deep gouge just left of the date. Despite the numerous marks (most observable only under a loupe), plenty of eye appeal remains on surfaces that are still clearly discernible as a proof striking. The color is medium yellow-orange with much reflectivity still present. This rare coin may provide a convenient entry point for series collectors who could never hope to obtain an unimpaired example.(Registry values: N4719)
