    Description

PCGS 1878 PR 65. It is an almost kneejerk reaction when one sees the 1878 date on a three-dollar gold piece to automatically think "common." On proofs, however, nothing could be further from the truth. Only 20 proofs were struck and Breen estimates that today perhaps only 12 may survive. Many deeply reflective business strikes are known and, in the past, have been offered as proofs. But true proofs are easily distinguishable by the small spot of die rust on the neck of Liberty just below the ear. The fields of this piece are very deeply mirrored and the devices have a thick mint frost that provides a strong cameoed contrast on each side. The surfaces overall have a distinctive and very attractive overlay of deep reddish-coppery patina. Population: 1 in 65, 1 finer. (NGC ID# 28AL, PCGS# 8042)

    Weight: 5.02 grams

    Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
