1883 Three Dollar, PR64+ Deep Cameo
    Excellent Eye Appeal

1883 $3 PR64+ Deep Cameo PCGS. CAC. The mintage of the 1883 three dollar gold was a meager 900 strikes for circulating, complementing the proof mintage of 89 pieces. The low totals for either format mean that many collectors are eager to obtain proofs as well as business strikes; both are quite elusive. The proofs can be distinguished by numerous features, including the "dished" appearance of the obverse die, although the deep cameo contrast present on this piece tends to dampen the effect. There is a wire rim around both sides, and a tiny rust spot appear on the headdress feather above the T in LIBERTY. As mentioned, this piece shows intense contrast between the fields and devices, the fields boldly reflective and the devices nicely frosted. A couple of small contact marks appear under a loupe in the obverse left field, and a tiny spot (possibly copper alloy) in the right obverse field. But, overall, this is a coin of marvelous quality and eye appeal. Population: 2 in 64+ Deep Cameo, 13 finer (6/13).(Registry values: N7079)
