Description

1883 Three Dollar, PR65 Deep Cameo
89 Pieces Struck

1883 $3 PR65 Deep Cameo PCGS Secure. The mintage of proof three dollar gold pieces was increased in 1883, to a relatively generous 89 pieces (13 more specimens than the previous year). However, this increased production total was dwarfed by the 106-piece mintage achieved the following year. Apparently, collector demand for proof three dollar gold coins was increasing throughout this period, as mintages continued to grow until near the end of the series, reaching a high of 291 examples in 1888. The 1883 proofs were widely saved by contemporary collectors and most of the original mintage survives today. Population data for this issue is predictably inflated, as PCGS and NGC combined have certified a total of 104 coins in all grades, 25 more than were originally minted.

This delightful Gem offers well-detailed design elements and deeply mirrored fields that contrast profoundly with the frosty devices to produce a stunning gold-on-black cameo effect when the coin is tilted in the light. The well-preserved yellow and greenish-gold surfaces show a slight orange-peel texture, with no mentionable distractions. Eye appeal is outstanding. Population: 5 in 65 Deep Cameo, 10 finer (11/16).
