1884 Three Dollar Gold, PR65 Cameo
    Rare in All Grades

1884 $3 PR65 Cameo PCGS. Gradually increasing collector demand prompted the coinage of 106 proof three dollar gold pieces in 1884, but likely no more than 75 examples are extant in all grades. The combined PCGS and NGC populations of 105 coins is highly inflated by resubmissions. There are two pieces in the Smithsonian Institution, the finer of which grades PR64 Deep Cameo, per Garrett and Guth; a third example resides out of reach in the American Numismatic Society. This Gem Cameo is above-average in terms of technical quality, and the eye appeal is outstanding. Both sides exhibit sharp, frosty relief elements set against deep mirroring in the fields, illuminated by deep orange-gold patina. Population: 5 in 65 (1 in 65+) Cameo, 1 finer (7/15).(Registry values: N7079)
