Description
1885 Three Dollar, Unc Details
Low Total Mintage, 109 Proofs Struck
1885 $3 -- Altered Surfaces -- PCGS Proof Genuine. Unc
Details. With only 801 circulation strikes and 109 proofs
manufactured in 1885, this is one of the keys to the three dollar
gold series in any format. Bowers and Winter estimated in 2005 that
75 to 90 proofs were extant in all grades. That range remains
viable today, though the actual number could be closer to 100
pieces.. Deeply reflective orange-gold surfaces are somewhat
unnatural, appearing to have been puttied to reduce the appearance
of field marks.
