Outstanding 1886 Three Dollar, PR64 Cameo

1886 $3 PR64 Cameo NGC. Discussing the 1886 three dollar piece in his United States $3 Gold Pieces book, David Bowers writes: "Proofs were made in the largest quantity to date in the series and are therefore easy to find, with market appearances being fairly frequent." Bowers estimates 80 to 100 of these coins are extant today.
The near-Gem Cameo specimen in this lot displays a striking gold-on-black appearance when the coin is observed from a direct overhead angle. A solid strike emboldens all of the design features, and both sides are covered with rich apricot-gold. The reverse is rotated about 30 degrees counterclockwise. A few inoffensive slidemarks on the cheek and handling marks in the fields preclude full Gem status. Nonetheless, this coin projects great technical quality and aesthetic appeal. Census: 36 in 64 Cameo, 17 finer (8/07).(Registry values: N4719)
