    1886 Three Dollar Gold
    PR65 Deep Cameo, CAC
    Impeccable Quality

1886 $3 PR65 Deep Cameo PCGS. CAC. Coming near the end of the three dollar gold series' 36-year run from 1854 through 1889 inclusive, the 1886 issue comprised a meager 1,000 circulation strikes in addition to 142 reported proofs. Interestingly, Q. David Bowers estimates in his series reference that proofs survive in an amount two to three times greater than the number of Mint State coins extant.

All such comparisons are relative, however. Bowers adds soon after:

"Proofs were made in the largest quantity to date in the series and are therefore easy enough to find, with market appearances being fairly frequent. Of course, all of this is relative, and it might be worth mentioning that a Proof 1886 $3 is at least six or seven times rarer than a Proof 1895 Morgan dollar (key to the Morgan series with just 880 struck and perhaps 600 to 700 known today)."

Of course, a coin of such tremendous quality as this Gem proof Deep Cameo PCGS is still rarer yet, and its eye appeal is every bit as nice -- nicer, in fact -- than its technical grade. The surfaces are medium straw-yellow, but the blindingly deep mirrors and stunning contrast are this coin's foremost attribute. Just the slightest accent of rose can be barely perceived through the denomination and the date, and lavish mint frost occupies all devices on both sides. PCGS has seen only five submissions with the Deep Cameo designation, and a single piece finer (3/13).

Despite Bowers' assertion, coins of this impeccable quality trade infrequently, and the CAC endorsement further separates this piece from the vast majority. In point of fact, Heritage has never before offered a PCGS PR65 Deep Cameo CAC three dollar gold piece of any date.(Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 38LY, PCGS# 98050)
