Description

Dazzling Near-Gem Cameo Proof
1887 Three Dollar Gold

1887 $3 PR64 Cameo PCGS Secure. CAC. Proof three dollar gold pieces are extremely rare as a whole, although some of the later-series issues, such as the present 1887-dated specimen, are a bit more accessible. With a mintage of 160 pieces, the 1887 ranks as second-highest amid the entire group, behind only the 1888. The present near-Gem Cameo example offers rich orange-gold color. The obverse fields show some light, grade-limiting hairlines, but the reverse is hairline-free and displays a pronounced orange-peel effect. The field-device contrast is strong, and there are no singular marks. Population: 4 in 64 Cameo, 11 finer (8/10).(Registry values: N4719)
