The Trompeter Gem Proof 1887 Three Dollar Gold

1887 $3 PR65 PCGS. Trompeter. A stunning Gem proof which has been carefully preserved since the time of issue. Bathed in a rich orange-gold glow of toning over the reflective fields, and the satiny frosted devices retain the desired contrast. The strike is sharp throughout, although close examination will note minute granularity on the 188 of the date, and below on the ribbon bow where the die was apparently slightly clogged. Normal die alignment, other proofs of this are known with medal turn alignment of this date, plus a couple of coins with overstruck reverses that show both alignments. Identifiable by a minute lint mark below D(O) and a tiny planchet flake in the right field near the rim just above 3 o'clock. Of the 160 pieces struck in proof, this coin is certainly close to the top of those known. In fact, the combined NGC and PCGS population reports show 14 coins this high with another eight pieces finer.
