Description
1888 Three Dollar, PR64 Cameo
Scarce in All Grades
1888 $3 JD-1, Low R.4, PR64 Cameo PCGS. Ex: D.L. Hansen
Collection. The 1888 proof three dollar gold piece comes from a
mintage reported at 291 pieces. Of these, only 110 to 130 proofs
are believed to survive, per John Dannreuther in United States
Proof Coins, Volume IV: Gold. Most of the proof mintage
reported was in a 200-coin delivery struck in April but not
delivered to the clerk until July. Some researchers have suggested
these 200 coins were not proofs, although the surviving proof
population suggests they were. The comparatively low proof survival
rate is thus likely due to significant numbers of coins not being
sold. Regardless, any proof 1888 three dollar piece is a scarce
coin. This Choice Cameo example displays excellent contrast with golden motifs set against inky-black fields that glimmer in-hand. The wreath bowknot shows a sharp strike, as does Liberty's headdress. Only a few small marks in the mirrored fields prevent full Gem classification. PCGS Population: 10 in 64 (2 in 64+) Cameo, 21 finer (12/25).
