Description

1888 Three Dollar Gold, PR64
Collectible Proof Date

1888 $3 JD-1, Low R.4, PR64 PCGS. The 291-piece mintage makes the 1888 three dollar gold an obtainable proof for many collectors. John Dannreuther estimates 110 to 130 proofs survive, all struck from a single die pair. Some researchers suggest additional proofs were struck from the circulation strike dies, but we see no evidence of that in our archives. The JD-1 proofs all have the date further left than the commercial strikes. This is a well-contrasted near-Gem proof with rich orange coloration and a few reddish accents across the pinpoint-sharp surfaces. Glassy-mirrored fields surround the frosted raised motifs for outstanding eye appeal. Only a few isolated, light hairlines are seen on either side. PCGS Population: 25 in 64, 36 finer (1/26).
