Description

1888 JD-1 Three Dollar, PR65 Cameo
291 Coins Minted, Half Survive

1888 $3 JD-1, Low R.4, PR65 Cameo PCGS. James Barton Longacre (1794-1869) created the designs for the three dollar gold pieces many years before this example was struck, as the first coins of this type were produced in 1854. While unverified to the best of our knowledge, there are those who believe that his designs for this coin and for other "Indian" coinage types, show the likeness of his daughter, Sarah.

Mint records show a proof production of 291 three dollar gold pieces in 1888, and John W. Dannreuther's current estimate is a survival of 110 to 130 coins, a little less than half the mintage. A single variety is identified for the proof 1888 three dollar pieces while a different die pair was used for the circulation strike coins, the latter having die doubling at UNITED. This sharply defined piece exhibits impressive lemon-yellow surfaces with outstanding field-to-device contrast. Population: 13 in 65 Cameo, 8 finer (12/25).
