    1888 Three Dollar Gold, PR62
    Struck From Proof-Only Dies

1888 $3 PR62 PCGS. The recorded mintage of the 1888 proof three dollar gold was 291 pieces, largest of the series, although some may have been melted or otherwise traded away -- see the Breen Proof Encyclopedia for much more. There are two proof varieties, although the present piece is struck from the proof-only dies, showing a long rust patch on the neck and no doubling on LIBERTY; the other dies with doubled LIBERTY were used as well for business strikes. This PR62 piece shows a few faint field hairlines and tiny contact marks that account for the grade. Deep orange-red surfaces show the expected needle-sharp strike and excellent eye appeal for the grade.(Registry values: N4719)
