1889 Three Dollar Gold, PR64 Cameo
Starkly Contrasted Final-Year Proof
1889 $3 PR64 Cameo NGC. Proof three dollar gold piece
production was unusually low in the final year of the denomination,
with only 129 coins produced; this in contrast to mintages of 142
to 291 coins during the previous few years. Much to the delight of
collectors, however, a significant portion of the mintage -- as
many as 80 to 100 pieces -- survives in collectible grades. The
certified population total of 141 examples in all grades -- more
than were actually struck -- is highly inflated by resubmissions.
This piece is a scarce Cameo, with remarkably bold, frosty devices
and deep, glassy mirroring in the fields. Some faint, minor
hairlines limit the technical grade, but hardly impede the eye
