Description

1889 Three Dollar, PR66 Cameo
Near Finest Known

1889 $3 JD-1, R.4, PR66 Cameo NGC. Deep, mirrored inky black fields contrast beautifully with delicate, champagne devices. Strike is exquisite, save for the highest strands of hair.

The 1889 three dollar gold piece was the end of the line for this unusual denomination. Production for both formats went out with a whimper rather than a bang, with the mintage of 129 proofs and 2,300 circulation strikes both less than half that of 1888. However, as with other dates of 1880s three dollar gold pieces, survival rates were high in both formats. This was especially true for proofs, as the certified population of 189 coins exceeds the original mintage by almost 50 percent, although this does indicate a significant number of resubmissions.

While most of this issue survived, top-grade examples did not readily persist to the present day. From 1881 through 1887, a smattering of PR67 and PR68 examples exist in various degrees of Cameo preservation. However, in 1889, the population reports top out at PR66, with three certification instances each in Proof, Cameo, and Deep Cameo at PCGS and 6 Cameos and one PR66* Cameo at NGC (5/25). This piece's top grade, combined with its exquisite eye appeal, place it in the highest league of the proof survivors of this date.
