Description

1873 Trade Dollar, PR64
Cameoed First-Year Issue

1873 T$1 PR64 Deep Cameo PCGS. Designed for export primarily to China, William Barber's design of a new "commercial dollar" had higher silver content than U.S. Seated dollars and were meant to supplant the Mexican 8 reales as preferred payment for foreign goods. This first-year example is deeply mirrored with iridescent reddish-brown toning. A few hairlines and contact marks are present, the most noticeable being an abrasion crossing Liberty's right knee into the fields above and below. A strong strike and richly contrasted devices lift this vibrant trade dollar to near-Gem proof status. Population: 36 in 64, 7 finer (12/13).
