    1873 Trade Dollar, PR64
    Coveted First-Year Proof Issue

1873 T$1 PR64 PCGS. The Guide Book reports a mintage of 865 proofs for this first-year issue, but Bowers (1993) indicates that the true mintage may be only 600 pieces based on monthly proof production figures from 1873 to 1883 cited in the 1887 Mint Director's Report. This Choice proof shows rose-violet patina with blue and orange accents intermittently. A few wispy slide marks in the left obverse field limit the grade, despite being well-concealed by the lavish toning. Population: 28 in 64, 7 finer (2/15).
