    1873 Trade Dollar, PR66 Cameo
    Second-Finest at NGC

1873 T$1 PR66 Cameo NGC. The first year of Trade dollar coinage was a transitional year, also witnessing the last of the Seated Liberty silver dollars. The proof mintage included 600 Seated Liberty pieces and 865 Trade dollars. Two reverse dies were used for production of the Trade dollars.

This example represents a late die state of the Patched Letters reverse, with the tops of E in STATES and F in OF strengthened. Parallel and curved die lines in the lower reverse field are characteristic of the late state pieces.

Although some design weakness is present on each side, this Premium Gem Cameo proof exhibits fully mirrored fields, lustrous devices, and delicate peripheral gold toning. Census: 1 in 66 Cameo, 1 finer (11/15).
Ex: Central States Signature (Heritage, 4/2011), lot 5236.
