    1877 Trade Dollar, PR67 Cameo
    Single-Finest Cameo at NGC

1877 T$1 PR67 Cameo NGC. The 2020 Guide Book lists the mintage of proof 1877 Trade dollars as 510 pieces, based on monthly production reports from the Mint. Some numismatists (like Q. David Bowers) believe the production total was larger, while others (like Walter Breen) believe it was actually smaller. Whatever the mintage might have been, it is certain that a number of coins were not distributed by year's end, as 125 examples were sold at face value on January 11, 1878, probably to coin dealers. The 1877 Trade dollar is an elusive issue in proof format and examples in PR67, with the Cameo designation, are extremely rare.

This magnificent Superb Gem proof exhibits sharply detailed, frosty design elements that contrast boldly with the deeply mirrored fields. Some incomplete detail in the eagle's feathers is due to lapping. The proof surface is unfinished between the eagle's claw and the branch. Vivid shades of lavender, cerulean-blue, and pale gold toning blanket the impeccably preserved surfaces and probably limit the contrast just enough to preclude an Ultra Cameo evaluation. Eye appeal is terrific. Census: 1 in 67 Cameo, 0 finer (10/19).(Registry values: N7079)
