Description

Part of 1877 Proof Set

1877 T$1 Trade Dollar PR66 Cameo NGC. Breen notes the reported proof mintage figure of 510 pieces but says:

"Actual mintage unknown; sole source for all these figures J.P. Kimball, in 1887 Director's Report. I have seen the monthly reports which were his source ... but not the daily delivery figures which might clarify the matter. I mention this specifically because the 1877 Trade dollar is a much rarer coin in proof state that its mintage figure suggests."

This gleaming Premium Gem is well-struck overall despite a hint of softness on Liberty's head, and the silver-white surfaces offer excellent contrast and minimal evidence of contact. Repunching appears on the 1 in the date. A top-notch conclusion to this well-matched minor proof set. Census: 4 in 66 Cameo, 1 finer (11/12).
