    1878 Trade Dollar, Outstanding PR64
    Popular Proof-Only Issue

1878 T$1 PR64 PCGS. CAC. The Philadelphia Mint restricted Trade dollar production to just 900 proofs in 1878. Treasury Secretary Sherman mandated that production of Trade dollars cease on February 22, 1878, before the Mint had struck any coins for circulation. A total of 300 proofs were manufactured in January followed by 200 coins each in February, March, and May. Lavender-orange centers transition to deeper shades of purple-gray at the margins of this Choice example. The strike is razor-sharp, as expected, and small contact marks are unobtrusive. This is a lovely near-Gem proof with watery fields and excellent eye appeal, as confirmed by the CAC endorsement.
