    Description

    1878 Trade Dollar, PR64
    First of the Proof-Only Issues

1878 T$1 PR64 PCGS. No 1878 circulation strikes were made at the Philadelphia -- only 900 proofs -- although a small mintage of 1878-CC Trade dollars was struck in Carson City, and more than 4 million 1878-S Trade dollars were produced at the San Francisco Mint. The 1878 proofs are technically the first of the proof-only Trade dollar issues. This near-Gem example is sharply struck with a few wispy hairlines and faint bits of gray and gold toning. The strike is extra-sharp throughout both sides, with noticeable contrast between the frosted devices and mirrored fields. Population: 75 in 64, 28 finer (3/19).
