Description

1878 Trade Dollar, PR66
Beautifully Toned, Conditionally Rare

1878 T$1 PR66 NGC. CAC. Although the Western branch mints continued to the strike Trade dollars in early 1878, the Philadelphia Mint was devoted to the new Morgan type from the outset, save for 900 proof Trade dollars that were struck for collectors. This was the first proof-only issue in the series. The present example displays a sharp strike and reflective fields. The obverse is bathed in lovely ocean-blue, violet, orange, and mint-gold hues, while the reverse displays sun-gold toning overall with a thin crescent of blue and lavender along the upper border. This issue is rare this fine, and the present coin is tied with one other as the finest at CAC. Census: 14 in 66, 4 finer (4/16).
