Description

1878 Trade Dollar, PR66
Subtle Field-Device Contrast

1878 T$1 PR66 PCGS. CAC. Business-strike coinage of Trade dollars was suspended at the Philadelphia Mint in 1878, but 900 proof examples were struck to satisfy collector demand. The issue enjoys a fairly high survival rate, but most examples seen are in the PR60 to PR63 range. The 1878 is elusive in PR66 condition, and finer grades are prohibitively rare. This Premium Gem proof boasts spectacular surfaces and preservation complementing sharp design elements and deeply mirrored fields under vivid shades of lavender-gray, emerald-green, and cobalt-blue toning. The eye appeal is outstanding. Population: 8 in 66, 1 finer (10/15).
