Description

1878 Trade Dollar, PR66
Subtle Field-Device Contrast

1878 T$1 PR66 PCGS. CAC. This Premium Gem proof boasts spectacular surfaces and preservation complementing sharp design elements and deeply mirrored fields under vivid shades of lavender-gray, emerald-green, and cobalt-blue toning. The eye appeal is outstanding.

Population Data (4/15): PCGS shows eight examples in PR66 and one PR68 finer. NGC reports 14 in PR66 and four PR67 finer. NGC also shows one amazing PR69 Cameo coin.

Heritage Commentary: Business-strike coinage of Trade dollars was suspended at the Philadelphia Mint in 1878, but 900 proof examples were struck to satisfy collector demand. The issue enjoys a fairly high survival rate, but most examples seen are in the PR60-PR63 range. The 1878 is elusive in PR66 condition, and finer grades are prohibitively rare.(Registry values: N4719)
