Description

1878 Trade Dollar, PR66
Spectacularly Toned Proof-Only Issue

1878 T$1 PR66 PCGS. CAC. The Trade dollar was a commercially unpopular issue by 1878, a watershed year for the once-useful trade coin, which was overshadowed by the debut of the Morgan dollar that year. The Philadelphia Mint only struck 900 examples in Proof format in 1878, to satisfy collector demand. A number of business-strike examples were produced at Carson City and San Francisco in 1878, but the denomination was clearly on borrowed time and no more regular-issue coins were ever struck.

This delightful Premium Gem exhibits sharply detailed design elements in most areas, but some incompleteness in the eagle's feathers is evident, due to lapping. The impeccably preserved surfaces are blanketed in spectacular shades of sea-green and cerulean-blue toning, with deeply mirrored fields underneath. Population: 10 in 66, 1 finer. CAC: 3 in 66, 0 finer (8/16).(Registry values: N4719)
