Description

1878 Trade Dollar, PR66
Proof-Only Philadelphia Striking

1878 T$1 PR66 PCGS. When issued, 1878 Trade dollar proofs were available from the Mint for $1.75 each in paper money, or for $1.50 each in silver. Still, 219 pieces remained unsold at the end of the year from a mintage of 900 pieces. Rather than melting the excess proofs, the Mint distributed them at bullion value -- likely to favored coin dealers. This stunning, deeply toned example must have spent decades carefully preserved in a Kraft envelope. Rotation under a light reveals nearly perfect mirrored fields that are concentrically toned in shades of sea-green, blue, and pale-rose hues. Iridescent colors play alongside the primary shades, while the strike is razor-sharp throughout both sides. Housed in a previous generation green label holder. Population: 13 in 66 (1 in 66+), 1 finer (6/18).(Registry values: N4719)
