Description

Crisply Defined 1879 Trade Dollar, PR62

1879 T$1 PR62 NGC. The 1879 Trade dollar is a proof-only issue with a mintage of 1,541 pieces. In his Silver and Trade dollar reference (1993), David Bowers indicates that "Most specimens were saved, but with varying degrees of care." The NGC/PCGS population data bear this out, as relatively few certified coins fall into the Gem- quality classification. Whispers of golden-tan color gravitate to the peripheries of this PR62 specimen, being deeper in hue and more extensive on the reverse, and a powerful strike brings out crisp delineation on the design elements. A faint, short obverse staple scratch, and some wispy hairlines in the fields, preclude a higher grade.(Registry values: N1793)
