Description
1880 Trade Dollar, PR67
Splendid Iridescent Toning
1880 T$1 PR67 NGC. CAC. The 1879 and 1880 Trade dollars had
the highest proof mintages of the series at 1,541 coins and 1,987
coins, respectively. Only two other issues, 1876 and 1882, had
proof mintages of more than 1,000 coins. Those high proof
production figures translate directly to high populations, but all
are rare in Superb Gem grades. In all grades, NGC has certified
about one-third of the original mintage for 1879 and 1880.This Superb Gem proof, although lacking a Cameo designation, presents excellent contrast with deep mirrored fields and frosty devices. The obverse is lightly toned at the center, within a frame of green, blue, and iridescent toning toward the border. The reverse is similarly and completely toned. The NGC Census of 29 in PR67, and 11 finer, includes all contrast designations (6/11).(Registry values: N7079)
