Description

1880 Trade Dollar, PR67+
The Second Finest Certified

1880 T$1 PR67+ NGC. CAC. Trade dollars were made only in proof format from 1879 to 1885. The year 1880 set a record for proof Trade dollar coinage with 1,987 pieces. Dave Bowers (1993) contends that most of these, perhaps 1,300 to 1,700 pieces, still exist and are readily available from PR60 to PR65. Indeed, NGC has graded nearly 700 examples and PCGS nearly 800 specimens.

This high-end Superb Gem is the second finest certified by either service (8/13). It presents a fair amount of field-motif contrast, more so on the obverse. Most of each side is toned in purple hues with a rose-tinted central area on the reverse. The design elements are boldly defined, and neither side reveals significant marks.(Registry values: N7079)
