Description

1880 Trade Dollar, PR67
Rare So Fine

1880 T$1 PR67 NGC. Proof Trade dollars are rare at the Superb Gem grade level, regardless of date. These coins were not widely popular among collectors, even though they were technically essential for a complete proof set. Many examples were cleaned or otherwise mishandled, and still others were simply spent during hard economic times.

The 1880 is perhaps one of the better-known issues in the proof Trade dollar series, or is at least one of the most frequently seen. The Mint struck 1,987 examples, significantly more than was produced of the Morgan type this year (1,355 proofs). In the remaining years of proof Trade dollar coinage, production more closely paralleled that of the Morgan dollar proof issues. This Superb Gem Trade dollar is fully struck and devoid of mentionable flaws. Both sides show deep mirrors and warm amber-gold toning, with deeper copper, violet, and blue hues around the peripheries. Census: 17 in 67, 1 finer (7/15).(Registry values: N7079)
